Software Sampler Windows. By Martin WalkerChopping audio files into beats and bars takes only a few seconds with the easy-to-use Beat Analysis function. Not content with adding a huge raft of improvements to their already comprehensive Emulator X soft sampler, Emu have also removed the need to use it with their own soundcards, so now everyone can get in on the fun.Emu's Emulator X software sampler caused a huge stir when it was originally released in early 2004. Running either as a stand-alone program or as a VST Instrument, it shipped with the Emu's 1820M audio interface, acclaimed for its breakthrough audio quality, and featured an incredibly comprehensive synthesis engine including more than 50 Z-Plane filters previously only found in Emu's hardware samplers, extensive 'patch cord' routing options, multi-wave LFOs, an integrated waveform editor and a range of DSP tools for sample manipulation. Later that year saw the release of the cheaper Proteus X, which omitted the user-sampling functions but was otherwise very similar, at an even lower price.
Now, Emulator X2 and Proteus X2 take things to a new level of sophistication.Emulator X2 can be bought in three versions: as an upgrade bundled with a single new Xperience library CD-ROM for existing Emulator X or Proteus X owners; as an add-on with the complete 3GB four-CD sample library to any of Emu's current audio interfaces or controller keyboards; or as a full retail product with the 3GB library and the Xmidi 2X2 USB MIDI interface that effectively acts as a dongle. The Emax is a classic sampler workstation from E-mu. It is sort of anext generation, it's not asgood as an but it's morepowerful than previous EII's.
The Emax can be found in several forms:the Emax, the Emax Rack, the Emax HD (built-in 20MB hard disk),the Emax HD Rack and the Emax SE (SynthesisEnhanced) with a built-in synthesizer section. The Emax's editing systemwill be familiar to users of E-mu's excellent series. The Emax has an extensive library collection of samples that can beloaded via the built-in 3.5' hard drive.
Or you can sample your ownsounds. The Sampler is powerful, but lo-fi. It samples at 12-bitresolution with variable sample-rates up to 42kHz. The built-in memoryis 512K which only gives you a few good seconds really. Sampling andediting is easy, complete and intuitive with auto sample placement,auto-looping, truncating, reversing, velocity cross-fade, etc. The Emaxalso features individual channel outputs and stereo outputs andextensive MIDI implementation. The Emax features many common analog synth-type controls for easilyshaping your samples.
Tune, filter and shape the envelope or use LFO'sand chorus to liven up your samples. There's also an on-board sequencersection. A real-time only 16-track, non-quantizable sequencer for basicscratch-pad use or simple arpeggios or patterns.
The SE and SE Plusmodels, the most advanced of the 12-bit Emax's, add a synthesizersection, newer advanced digital signal processors for sample editing anda SCSI port (standard on the SE Plus). The Emax instruments were themost advanced of the classic keyboard samplers of the late 1980's.
The Emax II which was released in 1989 brought the Emax series up tomodern specs with 16-bit sampling, 16-voice polyphony, 16 MIDI channels, stereo samples, 1MB RAM expandable to 8MB, SCSI, 8 assignable outputsand the SE's synthesis functions. And finally, the Emax II Turbo camewith 4MB RAM standard and a 4MB hard disk.
Whichever Emax you choose, they're all classic machines still capable of professional qualityresults when used in making the music of today. It has been used byU2, Orbital, Astral Projection, Skinny Puppy, Meat Beat Manifesto,Nine Inch Nails, Mouse on Mars, Alphaville, Beastie Boys, Clock DVA,Die Krupps, Faith No More, Richard H Kirk, KMFDM, Steve Roach, RichardBarbieri, Wolfgang Gartner and Depeche Mode.
