I made it to chapter 2 before I was ready to burn that piece of garbage along with all other copies I could get my hands on. The settings are repetitive, the characters are all 1-dimensional stereotypes with no motivation, the conflict (if you could call it that) was pointless, and the book is meant to be a safer version of 'The Great Gatsby' yet in the first 4 chapters there are at least 4-5 instances of characters having drunk sex. All the girls in the story are cheating bitches, all the guys except 1 are cheating dicks, Jake is a Mary Sue, and Dipsy is the only character you could ever empathize with, and he's portrayed as a weird stoner. The book glorifies underage drinking, underage sex, and cheating on partners.

With that being said, let's talk about it more in depth, shall we?Edit: When I said 'made it to chapter 2,' I mean that that was the tipping point for me. I have read the full book, and what I'm stating is what I took away from it as a whole.

Korman took the themes in The Great Gatsby and put them in the normal high school students lifeAfter looking at his picture and reading his bio I doubt he's real familiar with 'the normal high school students life'.Reading Gatsby then Jake would be a great way for students to compare how a brilliant novelist explores various themes as opposed to the methods of a YA writer. The problem is that schools don't have time for both books.

YA versions of classic stories can be very well done (the movie Brick was excellent on many levels), but I have a gut feeling that this one won't end up being a modern classic. What is the purpose of English class?

I imagine it's better to teach students to enjoy reading than it is to teach classics and inform them that they should be enjoying them even though they are often dreadfully bored. I've never read Jake Reinvented but I'm all for mixing up the curriculum.I sincerely doubt your school would assign a book that 'glorifies' drunken sex and infidelity things anymore than Gatsby 'glorifies' drunken tuxedo parties and adultery or Hemingway 'glorifies' war. In addition, I don't think you would be able to tell from the second chapter.In fact, in the same way a class might read Romeo and Juliet and watch Westside Story.The author even specifically states that this is not supposed to replace Great Gatsby in any way. It's more like an homage/retelling that can introduce the themes or try to relate them to the modern day.In any case it seems like you can put your pitchfork down.P.S. Great Gatsby is also full of 'cheating bitches' and 'cheating dicks.' If you can't handle the concept of infidelity maybe you actually aren't ready for Gatsby yet.

I'm split on this as someone who went to college for English and teaching. You can have the whole canon debate and what not, but what is the point if half the class doesn't read the required reading.

Discussions are moot, class is dull, and best of all half your students are failing. Well they should have read the book, right? Who is going to get blamed though? Especially in our current public school system. Add in most teachers actually want to help and feel the consequences of their students not thriving.

I grew up reading the classics, I've read a lot of other stuff too. Teaching is difficult because it's not about you. Sure, this book really inspired, moved, changed your life.

Teaching is so much about adapting to the classroom environment you are presented with. Especially in English, it is not about getting the students to agree or think like you.

It is about supplying them with the tools to critically think, look at two sides to a story, and be able to articulate their thoughts and emotions. Also, there are a lot of bad teachers out there, I couldn't deal with that shit and just got my English degree. I may pursue teaching later but it is a difficult job, especially considering the pay. During 10th, 11th, & 12th grade classes we read:Of mice and men, the old man and the Sea, great Gatsby, Maltese falcon, Huck Finn, count of Monte Cristo, three musketeers, great expectations, Frankenstein, and some others that slip my mind. That's not even counting the required poetry.

And I have read all of those except Maltese falcon. And I enjoyed most of them. I guess my point is the times are changing and teachers must as well. If someone wants to pursue English in college, or is an avid reader, they will most likely encounter many of these. The problem is like I said you need to work with students not against. I would love if schools still taught this, I mean I had to learn Middle English for Chaucer, sir gaiwan, etc, but for most people that is a waste.

Not because it's not useful, but because many just won't do it. I think we agree that many better written pieces are being swept aside, but that is always what us old farts say. I'm only 26 but I feel old sometimes.
